Abstract                                                                                                                 

Background: Evaluation of Range of motion is an essential outcome measure for any orthopaedic management protocol. A new technology is developed to measure range of motion by using mobile phones. The objective of this study is to determine Intra and Interrater reliability of mobile device goniometer “Goniometer Records®” in measuring lumbar flexion range of motion.

Material and Methods: Fifteen students of Physiotherapy aged between 19-24 years. Inclusion criteria: student willing to participate, having normal BMI. Exclusion criteria: Any pain or condition not permitting repeated spinal flexion movement. Outcome measure were Intraclass correlation coefficient for consistency.iPod mobile device with Goniometer Records® software was used. Subject was suitably undressed. Subject was standing with feet shoulder width apart. Spinous process of second sacral vertebra S2 was located at mid-point of line joining posterior superior iliac spines. From here spinous process of  twelfth thoracic vertebra T12 was located by palpation and marked. Goniometer was set at zero to begin and between each site over spine. Readings at T12 and S2 were noted in standing and on maximum flexion with IPod goniometer center line over the markings. Sacral reading was subtracted from T12 range to eliminate hip movement. For intra-rater reliability three readings were noted. Then two other testers took one reading each. Sufficient rest was given between readings for flexion movement.

Results: Fourteen females and one male within normal body mass index participated. Mean age of participants was 21.47 years (SD 1.46 range 19-24). Intra-rater reliability using ICC was r= .917 and inter-rater r=.816 at significance of alpha < 0.05.

Conclusion: Mobile device goniometer “Goniometer Records® “ has high intra-rater reliability. The inter-rater reliability was moderate. This device can be used to assess range of motion of spine flexion, representing uni-planar movement
